Winter Bird Feeders
The grade 1 classes have been busy helping the winter birds in the area get through the relatively mild winter. We created bird feeders out of pine cones. We attached a piece of yarn to the pine cone, covered it in WOW butter (peanut-free), and then rolled them in bird seed. We are hanging them in trees around the school and nature area. The pine cones will be returned to the ground where they can be dispersed. Birds will use the yarn when building their nests in the spring, and ofcourse the best part is the birds (and likely squirrels) will enjoy the yummy treat we have left them. Hopefully we will be lucky enough to catch a bird eating at one of our feeders.
Nature Journals
Here at Warden Ave P.S we are so lucky to have such a large and natural school yard where students can play and learn. Our first project this term was to create a nature journal where we explored the outdoor nature study are during the fall season. Some of our studies included:
- Learning the names of some of the wildflowers (dragon snaps, asters)
- Identifying and learning the names of some of the trees (Ontario Pine, Dogwood, Basswood, Ash)
- Leaf stamping in fall colours
- We also observed and explained why some trees lose their leaves during the fall and some stay green all year
- We used our sense of hearing to listen for the sounds of the nature area and our community
-We wrote nature riddles where each student chose something in nature, wrote 3 clues about it to help you guess.
Here's an example from Kiara:
I'm green
I can tickle sometimes
People like to play on me.
What am I?
Grass!
