BATTERY BLITZ
Congratulations to all of the classes who brought in batteries for proper disposal this week! We collected over 10kg of batteries which will NOT be ending up in a landfill. Ms. Roulston is going to take them to a Call2Recycle centre for proper disposal. Check their map as there are several drop off sites all throughout the GTA.
School Clean Up Day
As part of our Earth Month celebrations we are performing a school yard clean up on Thursday, April 20th and Friday, April 21st. Our Thursday event saw only a few classes going outside due to the rain. We will be holding a make-up cleanup date next Day 4.
APRIL IS EARTH MONTH!
We have lots of exciting events happening this month in celebration of Earth month!
April 18th - 24th Please help support our Clothing Drive! We are accepting donations of used clothing and textiles for Diabetes Canada. Your donation keeps clothes and textiles out of the landfill, helps support programs and services for adults and children with disabilities, AND raises money for the school. We are also holding a Battery Blitz. We are asking families to drop off old used batteries for proper disposal. Let's keep batteries out of the landfill!! |
February - Energy Parade
The Eco Club has been hard at work conveying the results of our energy audit to the school. In the hopes of educating the students and staff , students are hoping their enthusiasm to save energy will be contagious with our ENERGY PARADE. Some of the eco team will be touring the school spreading catchy slogans to help students remember easy ways they can make a difference and save energy at school and at home.

Energy Audit
The Eco Team has been busy conducting the first energy audit of the school year. Manal and Sophie are busy giving each classroom in the school some descriptive feedback based on our results. We are hoping teachers and students will use this information to help reduce the unnecessary energy usage in the classroom.

January News
We were very privileged this year to receive a spot in the Eco school Middle School Conference for students in grades 7 and 8. We could only send 5 members of our eco team to this event. They did an amazing job of representing the school. They spent the day meeting different students, learning fun eco-educational cooperative games, as well as how to undergo planning an Eco event. We have a couple of goals we have set for this year that we hope will help spread and strengthen awareness and appreciation for the environment within our community.
November News
Two events important for our Eco team in November were:
1. The Waste audit. The grade 5 students did a 30 minute school yard cleanup. The grade 1 classes then sorted the waste collected into compost, landfill and recycling. We collected over 3kg of trash!!! Most of the litter we collected were recycling containers. Much of the litter definitely is coming from the students at recess - chip bags and candy wrappers, and many of the containers from our snack program are not being properly disposed of. This is an easy problem to solve and we are hoping by creating this art display and raising awareness that we can make a difference and reduce the amount of litter. We also realized we need a better solution for garbage containers outside so that students have somewhere they can put their waste and not have to carry it all recess. |
2. Eco schools kickoff
Every year teachers from Eco schools across the TDSB get together to talk about initiatives and share ideas to help make their Eco school programs successful. This year we were very proud to be the hosting school of this event. It is also a time where schools receive their school plaques depending on what status they achieved. Warden Ave. P.S received our platinum plaque which is now proudly displayed by the office. |

PUT WASTE IN ITS PLACE!
Part of being an Eco team member means setting a good example! You all should know how to sort your waste properly and encourage your classmates to do the same. Remember each of you will be delivering a presentation to a class in the school. You will be educating students and teachers on how to sort their waste properly (which will make your job as collectors much easier). Review these posters at home so that you are prepared for your presentation.
